This question has been in the back of my mind

Postby DGBaker » Mon Jul 20, 2009 10:55 pm

Is ETA permitting Accutron to continue to use its movements?
If NOT where are they going to source a Swiss movement.

DGBaker,
Not to become guilty of a "cop-out" to your question,,,,, but in the following "tirade" I hope that you can see my intense dis-satisfaction with what most people are calling "Accutron's" these days.

I will only reserve my "Accutron" postings, threads and comments addressing the "REAL" and genuine original Accutron watches with the original Tuning Fork escapements. I carried the entire Bulova product line since 1973 in my retail store "It's About Time". However,,, when Bulova started deceiving the consumers by bringing back,,, or supposedly "re-introducing" the Accutron line again, I protested!

There were tuning fork logos on the dials,,, tuning fork logos on the crowns,,, tuning fork logos on the case backs,,, tuning fork logos on the buckles,,, tuning fork logos on the inner and outer boxes,,, tuning fork logos on the instruction manuals & warranty cards,,, tuning fork logos on factory hang tags. The absolutely HUGE problem was with all of this Accutron tuning fork logos being pasted everywhere was the fact that there was NOT a tuning fork movement powering the watches!!! They had common quartz movements!!!

This placed a sour taste in my mouth for the supposedly newly re-introduced Accutron line of watches. I consequently refused to stock them in my store.

Thank You!!
I have stepped down off my soapbox now,,, and my blood pressure is almost "normal" again.
Please excuse my agitation over what I perceived to be "less than honest" marketing attempts.

Well I'd have to say my Accutron Astronaut GMT 28b088 with the ETA 2893-a2 is one of the finest SS watches I own esp. for the price.
Probably my second fave next to my Snoopy Speedy, NOT because I like omega as much as have a thing for Peanuts related junk. ;0)
In fact for the price, quality, and movement they put Rolex and Omega SS to shame.
Either Accurron was selling them at cost or the other's really really really need to lower their msrp.
And I'd argue anyone that the bracelet IS the best ever created by a human being.

Not to mention the 5 year warranty, which I guess is doubled due to my VISA II.

So, I still need, well, would like an answer, ok let's expand it, what is everyone doing now that ETA did their thing.

And what's the reasoning behind it?
To prevent counterfeiting? Did they feel that movements were being purchased by Swiss makes eg omega and rolex and then being sold to Asia thru them?

DGBaker,
In as much as dealing with the modern Bulova "Accutron" watches that have a mechanical or jeweled escapement,,,, they buid a timepiece as nice and with as much quality for the money as anyone.

What I was up in arms about was how the company chose to market or "re-introduce" the "Accutron" back into the watch world. The tuning fork watch was a HUGE deal starting back in October of 1960 when Bulova first introduced Accutron to the public. The tuning fork watches were only manufactured for 17-18 years. Over the past 48-49 years people have had a love-hate relationship with Accutron watches.

Fast forward to the 1990's and Bulova states that they are bringing back or "re-introducing" their Accutron line. They absolutely did NOT. The tuning fork emblems and logos were plastered all over the product and on all printed materials. The great "lie" was that the watches NEVER had an Accutron or tuning fork movement as advertised. "THAT" is my problem with the so-called Accuron watches.

I do not have a problem with Bulova producing a decent timepiece with a Swiss automatic movement. I will go on record as stating those watches are as nice as timepieces costing a LOT more money. However,,,, I DO still have a problem with the company pasting tuning fork emblems & logos all over a watch that does not even have that incorporated inside the watch.

No, I understand what you're saying completely, case in point, pun intended, the Bulova Marine Stars I own, the 97 NO tuning fork.

The new Marine Star auto, it's NOT even an Accutron: 98a106?

Tuning fork on the face, one on the snap, one on the rotor, one on the caseback, one on the crown, that's five.

EDIT: one on the top of the box, a billion on the pillow, one on the inner box, and the warranty card

I'd like to get me a true hummer, the original to match my eta Astro.
I even have that little Bulova travel alarm clock that simulates the face of the Astro.
The alarm on it IS simply hilarious and loud.

Know anyone?

Agree! Accutron was, and remains, an unique of movement. It was never a brand. Put it this way: all original Accutron were Bulova, but not all Bulova were Accutron.

Wien,
Indeed you are correct. I have been an authorized Bulova agent since 1973. Bulova currently has,,, or has had many different model names such as Bulova, Caravelle, Benetton, Tuxedo, Marine Star, Accutron, Harley Davidson, Vintage Collection and others.

Just like Wien stated,,, all Impala's are Chevy's,,,,,, but not all Chevy's are Impala's!!!

Hi! Long time no post here. Work is really tight and quite often stressful these days. This is when we need the humming sound. Yes! We get refreshed after this sound!

Thank you, Boomer. I second this fundamentalism. For me, it is more sensible to use Bulova for the new lines, rather than the special noun Accutron.

In those fairs in Basel, the high profile brands proclaim wonderful 'breakthroughs'.... year after year. But I'd say there two real ones from 1950 till now only: Accutron and Quartz.

Well said! Sure,,, there have been many improvements in technology. However very few of what I would call revolutionary strides or breakthroughs in timekeeping.
